Fly Fishing for Tarpon
It has been said by many of the greats, the tarpon is the perfect big game species to target with a fly rod. Explosive visual strikes, relentless power and unbelievable aerial display put on in a shallow water environment make the tarpon the ultimate challenge for the fly fisherman.
For full size tarpon the Florida Everglades is a perfect spot.
Low fishing pressure and an abundance of tarpon puts the Everglades on top of the list. May, June, September and October are peak months to target tarpon with a fly rod in the Everglades. Bring your 11-12wt rods, you are going to need them!
For the smaller juvenile tarpon, 10-40#, it is hard to beat the backcountry of Charlotte Harbor in the summertime.
Early mornings, calm shallow water with tarpon rolling and finning on the surface is what this fishery is all about. July and August is prime time for this shallow water fishery.
Perfect size fish for your 8-9wt rod.
For the experienced big game fly fisherman to find a guide not only with the knowledge, tools and skills but also with a true passion for the game is imperative to consistently achieve success.
In this day and age of fly by night guides can be far easier said than done.
